text with tape

last tuesday we were set the brief for the day it was (text with tape) this basically meant creating our own type face using just tape and the surroundings we had available.

the whole year group was split into four groups of around six people each then in our seperate groups we set about deciding what type face would suit our work and where our type face would be used.

in our group we came up with our font called lumine this is taken from the latin word meaning light, therefore with this in mind we set about fine tuning our type face. we found that we could created a script type face on a sheet of perspex with the tape and then dependent on where the sun was and at what angle we could project our text onto any surface we wanted to.

i felt the project went well and we were left with a quite unique idea and product at the end of the day. there was allot of varying and different takes on this brief as it was so open and it was good to see what other groups came up with and created.

poole trip

last week as a class group we all caught a bus down to poole. when we were there it was up to us to take pictures and document our day with everything from images, sketches and what we heard of conversations in and around the harbour. 

we all paired of into groups of three or four and myself , ollie and jade decided to try to get a feel for the history of pool and its surroundings. we therefore decided to go into the poole museum were we were able to look at displays and take pictures of things that were important to the history of the small sea side town. 

we were lucky in our group in that ollie has lived in poole for over twenty years and new all the areas and quite allot of the history and reasoning behind certain objects around the quay.

i enjoyed the day as it let us put pen to paper and write down and sketch what we were feeling and taking in from our surroundings, a couple of us have decided to go back in our own time for a couple of hours to see if the weather and the small group of people will change  our oppinion or outlook and the town as a whole. 

helvetica research

we have just completed the session on helvetica. we looked at the type face and researched it right back to when and why it was designed. since the introduction of helvetica it has been appearing in corporate logos, signage for transportation systems and hundreds of other uses all around the globe  

the font was designed in 1957 for the Haas type foundry in munchenstein, by Max Miedinger with Edvard hoffman.
